Shinnecock Hills

Shinnecock Hills lies between Hampton Bays and Southampton Village and is known for the high-end homes lining its bayfront and for its two prestigious golf courses: Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (which has hosted the U.S. Open five times and will do so again in 2026) and National Golf Links of America.  This area is the ancestral home of the Shinnecock Nation, a federally recognized tribe who have created a Cultural Center and Museum open to the public, and host a variety of programs and a large annual powwow showcasing performers of traditional dances and music from across the country. Stony Brook Southampton College is also located here, with its renowned School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, graduate programs and a Summer Writers Conference.

In the early days of Southampton farmers would bring their cattle to Shinnecock Hills to graze in summer. In the 1890s the painter William Merritt Chase taught at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of the Arts here and worked in a studio designed by Stanford White. This community, which lies north of Montauk Highway between Tuckahoe Lane and St. Andrews Road, just west of Southampton Village, came to be called the Art Village, and several of the original cottages remain as private homes.

A little-known jewel of Shinnecock Hills is the exclusive Atterbury Hills area, where high end homes perched atop a bluff, one of the highest points in Southampton Town, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across sparkling Shinnecock Bay to Meadow Lane in Southampton and the ocean beyond—some of the most thrilling water views in the Hamptons and not widely known. Several homes here were designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, the architect who designed Forest Hills Gardens in Queens, and whose family owned a large estate here. Several of these stunning homes have been painstakingly restored and are lovingly maintained.
