Westhampton

Westhampton

Although the Hamptons villages and hamlets east of the Shinnecock Canal get most of the attention, more and more people are discovering the advantages to living or buying second homes in the areas west of the canal, such as Westhampton. For one thing, these areas have beautiful, bucolic wetlands as well as ocean and bay beaches, and waterfront homes with breathtaking panoramic views. There are many places in the area to enjoy fishing and water sports.

Homebuyers get more for their money in the western Hamptons and escape the traffic bottlenecks farther east in summer. It’s a faster commute for those coming out from NYC. The area is peaceful and quiet, and affords for many a welcome respite from the pressures of daily life, an opportunity to kick back and relax.

Westhampton was established in 1666, when the governor awarded land in the area, which had been purchased from the Shinnecock Tribe by settlers, to Southampton Town. Today Westhampton includes two villages, Westhampton Beach and West Hampton Dunes, along with unincorporated areas governed by Southampton Town.
